25 Jun: An Unshaken Identity

Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children; And walk in love. Ephesians 5:1–2

Scripture Reading: Ephesians 4:32–5:10

I once spoke at a secular conference for couples who were unable to have children. Many of them carried deep sadness because infertility had changed the way they saw their future. I understood part of their pain because I had walked that road too.

As I spoke, I tried to encourage them with this truth: your life can still have meaning even if you never become a parent. Your identity is not empty because you are childless. You are still “fearfully and wonderfully made” by God, and there is purpose ahead of you.

Afterward, a woman came to me with tears in her eyes. “Thank you,” she said. “I’ve felt worthless because I don’t have children. I needed to hear that I am fearfully and wonderfully made.”

I gently asked if she believed in Jesus. She said, “I walked away from God years ago, but I need a relationship with Him again.”

Moments like that show how deep and beautiful the gospel is. Some identities are painful because they are hard to reach, like becoming a mother or father. Others can disappear suddenly, like a job title after unemployment. But in Christ, we receive an identity that no loss can remove.

Ephesians 5:1 says we are God’s dearly loved children. Then verse 2 calls us to “walk in love,” following the example of Christ. This means our purpose is bigger than a role, a title, or what life has allowed us to have.

Psalm 139:14 reminds us that every human being is “fearfully and wonderfully made.” And John 1:12–13 tells us that all who receive Jesus and believe in His name are given the right to become children of God.

That woman came in carrying despair, but she left with hope. She was being drawn back to the One who could give her an identity and a purpose far greater than anything this world can offer.

Reflect & Pray

Is there someone in despair whom you can affirm as “wonderfully made” today? With whom can you share the offer of becoming a child of God?

Father, life in all its fullness is Yours alone to give. I open my hands to accept it.
