20 Jun: Withdraw and Be Renewed

He [Jesus] would withdraw to desolate places and pray. Luke 5:16

Scripture Reading: Luke 5:12–16

A River Runs Through It tells of two brothers growing up in western Montana with their father, a Presbyterian minister. Every Sunday morning, Norman and Paul sat under his preaching. By evening, they would hear him preach again. But between those services, their father stepped away with them into the hills and streams. That quiet time helped him rest, regain strength, and prepare his heart to serve again.

We see this same rhythm in the life of Jesus. He taught the crowds, healed the sick, and fulfilled His mission“to seek and to save the lost.” (Luke 19:10). Yet Luke also tells us,“But he would withdraw to desolate places and pray” (Luke 5:16).

Jesus gave Himself fully to others, but He also made time to be alone with the Father. Those quiet moments renewed Him for the work ahead.

We need the same. Serving, helping, and carrying responsibilities can drain the heart if we never pause to be refreshed by God. Time with the Father is not wasted time. It is where our strength is restored, our peace is renewed, and our hearts are filled again.

May we follow Jesus’ example and regularly withdraw to be with our Father, allowing Him to restore our souls and prepare us to serve faithfully.

Reflect & Pray

What comes to mind when you think of a “lonely” place? When and where can you withdraw to simply spend time with the Father?

Thank You for the reminder, Father, of my need for time spent with You. I need Your grace and strength to renew my often-weary soul.
