23 Oct: The Wisdom of Giving
The sons of this world are more shrewd in dealing with their own generation than the sons of light. Luke 16:8
Scripture Reading: Luke 16:1–9
During the coronavirus pandemic, schools around the world were forced to close. In China, teachers began using DingTalk, an app that allowed students to attend classes online. But some students discovered that if the app received enough poor ratings, it might be removed from the App Store. They quickly organised thousands of one-star reviews, causing its rating to drop.
Jesus wouldn’t have approved of their attempt to avoid schoolwork, but their clever thinking reminds us of a parable He told in Luke 16. A manager who was about to lose his job reduced the debts of those who owed his master money, hoping they would help him when he became unemployed. Although the manager acted dishonestly, his master commended him for thinking ahead.
Jesus used this story to teach His followers about making wise use of their resources. He said, “And I tell you, make friends for yourselves by means of unrighteous wealth, so that when it fails they may receive you into the eternal dwellings” (Luke 16:9).
We often think about money in terms of what we might lose, but Jesus encourages us to consider the good we can accomplish with what we have. Money and possessions are temporary, yet when we use them to help others, show kindness, and support God’s work, our generosity can have lasting significance. It also reflects our trust in God rather than in material possessions.
And even when money is limited, we still have something to offer. Our time, abilities, encouragement, and willingness to listen can make a difference in someone’s life.
Today, let’s ask God to open our eyes to opportunities to serve others. May He give us wisdom to use whatever He has entrusted to us generously, faithfully, and for His glory.
